THREADS
We offer both rayon and polyester embroidery thread. Which do we recommend? It depends. Rayon thread is beautiful, but delicate. The colors will fade when laundered and may well shrink in the dryer. Have you noticed that your beautiful embroidery design puckered after you washed it? Chances are the threads have shrunk, just like a rayon blouse. Polyester thread is a much tougher fiber. It is less likely to break when you embroider with it and the finished product will hold up much better in the laundry.
When you look at the spools, the rayon looks a bit shinier. But once the thread is part of an embroidery design, you really cannot tell one from the other. We recommend polyester thread for anything that will get frequent washings. Rayon offers a more complete color palette, so for wall hangings or other things that will never be laundered, you may want to use rayon.
We carry 450 colors of the market-leading super strength Robison-Anton rayon thread, known for its consistent quality. We also offer nearly 300 colors of Poly-X40 polyester thread at about half the price of Robison-Anton. We've had years of success using it for embroidery. We offer quantity discounts of up to 15% on both brands.
YLI produces decorative threads and ribbons of the very highest quality. We carry many of them for those special projects. For example, we recommend YLI Pearl Crown twisted rayon and YLI Candlelight textured metallic yarn for embellishment, many serger applications, and bobbin work.
We specifically recommend YLI Soft Touch for bobbins for Pfaff machines. This Egyptian cotton thread is also great for quilt piecing, appliqué, heirloom sewing, and lace.
We love using YLI Variations for quilting, thread painting, appliqué, embellishing and machine embroidery projects. It's a trilobal polyster that adds great color and texture.
YLI Fine Metallic works well in machine embroidery, embellishment projects, serging, and needlework, while YLI Silk #100 is a staple in machine quilting and in both hand and machine appliqué. And the Egyptian cotton YLI Machine Quilting thread is a standard for many of our quilters.
If you have a serger, you probably already know about YLI Woolly Nylon. Excellent for both upper and lower loopers, it adds a special dimension to your projects. Add some extra spice with the Variegated, Metallic, and Extra Woolly versions.
We recommend Finishing Touch bobbin thread for use with Baby Lock and Brother machines. Find it in our Miscellaneous category, along with other water soluble, invisible, fusible, and bobbin threads.
